Library Strategy 2019-2023

The library strategy outlines Copenhagen Libraries' common mission and core services.

The Copenhagen Libraries' mission is to create eager readers, critical consumers of culture and engaged citizens. The wording about eager readers reflects the libraries' focus on literature and reading. Critical cultural consumers meaning citizens who are critical of sources and conscious of quality

The libraries' core services are:

  • to lend materials and make a sublime collection available free of charge to all citizens both physically and online.
  • to be an open physical space where you feel welcome, safe and inspired.
  • to have a staff that communicates, guides and helps to search for knowledge and materials.
  • to inspire citizens of all age groups to use both the materials and the library space.
  • to facilitate library-relevant activities in close interaction with the users.

A successful solution to the task requires focused choices and opt-outs. This is especially important in a city that is growing and at a time when citizens' media consumption is changing and becoming more digital. Copenhagen's Libraries have therefore selected four focus areas which will be a particularly high priority in the coming years.

The areas are:

  • The physical library
  • The digital library
  • Literature and reading
  • Children and teenagers.
